Stayokay reopens renovated location in the heart of Amsterdam

18 February 2025

Amsterdam, 18 February 2025 – Stayokay has reopened its renovated hostel on Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam. Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen, a historic building dating from 1730, has been completely renovated with a strong focus on sustainability.

Stayokay, formerly NJHC: Nederlandse Jeugdherberg Centrale (Dutch Youth Hostel Central), has been located in the building since 1939. The hostel now runs entirely without natural gas and offers guests a unique combination of historic charm and modern facilities in the bustling city centre.

Sustainable renovation with respect for history

The renovation of Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen was carried out with respect for the building's monumental status. Thanks to smart and innovative solutions such as insulation on the inside of the walls, HR+++ glass and Fineo monument glass, 64 solar panels on the roof, heat pumps and underfloor heating, the building has been modernised without compromising its historical value.

Joris van Nistelrooij, property manager and director of NJHC:

"If an ancient building can be sustainable, then it can be done anywhere. Our collaboration with De Groene Grachten (expert in the sustainable renovation of historic buildings) has helped us make a complex building like this one gas-free. The monumental status and unique building structure required customisation, but the result is an inspiring example of how modernity and history can go hand in hand."

Marijke Schreiner, general director of Stayokay, adds:

"Sustainability is in Stayokay's DNA. This renovation shows that we not only look at how we can reduce our impact, but also how we can inspire guests to make conscious choices during their stay."

Green renovation

The process began with a cultural-historical assessment of the building, during which a careful decision was made about which elements should be preserved. Based on that analysis, sustainability measures were developed that contribute maximally to energy and CO2 savings. The sustainability measures emphasise that environmentally conscious choices are also possible in buildings with a rich history.

The renovation is in line with Stayokay's ambition to prioritise sustainability in all its hostels. This approach fits with the mission to have a positive impact on both guests and the environment.
