Art for art’s sake

Rotterdam has a lot of great museums but one of the most popular is Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which focuses on the visual arts.

It showcases a wide variety of Dutch and European masterpieces including some Rembrandts.

“Reflect on paintings by Monet, Van Gogh and Mondriaan and discover the emergence of impressionism and modernism.”

In the museum you walk through the history of art from the early Middle Ages until the present day. From Bosch and Rembrandt to DalĂ and Maigritte. You can reflect on paintings by Monet, Van Gogh and Mondriaan and discover the emergence of impressionism and modernism. The museum also has a large collection of designer artefacts such as furniture by Rietveld and the contemporary Dutch Design. Tip: have a drink in the restaurant looking out over the sculpture garden.

Hey, did you know?

The museum was created in 1849 when Frans Boijmans left his art collection to the city of Rotterdam. When Daniël van Beuningen’s collection was acquired in 1958, the name was extended.
