Museums are usually all about the collections, but at the Bonnefantenmuseum, it’s the 28-metre high building with its zinc covered dome (or cupola) that attracts so many visitors.
“An addition to the zinc cupola, there is an imposing monumental stairway leading to the exhibition rooms.”
This spectacular building on the Maas was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi and is a key feature of the Maastricht skyline. The museum hosts a collection of contemporary art (from the 1980s onwards) and changing exhibitions. Among the old art there is an important collection of medieval religious objects and early Italian paintings.
