Awesome architecture

Palaces are usually pretty impressive and this one in Bergen op Zoom is certainly no exception.

In fact the Markiezenhof is hailed as one of Western Europe’s most beautiful city palaces. The palace was in the late 15th century by famous master architects Anthonie and Rombout Keldermans.

“The Markiezenhof is one of Western Europe’s most beautiful city palaces.”

What used to be the dwelling of the Lords and Margraves of Bergen op Zoom, is now a museum. As you walk through the extensive palace with all its period rooms, galleries, staircases, courtyards and gardens, you can soak up local history. The treasure hunt in the Fairground Museum that is also housed here is fun for the kids. Remember to have a look at the old nougat stall, play on the fairground machines or operate the models of the old-fashioned attractions.

Hey, did you know?

The palace was last occupied by a margrave in 1726. It went on to serve various purposes as an administrative centre for the marquisate, a military hospital and a barracks. It has been a museum since 1987.
