Bobbing in the City of Cheese

Calmly bobbing around on the water with a picnic basket, isnā€™t that the very best way to spend a sunny day? Rent a four, six or eight-person boat in Alkmaar and discover the beautiful city of cheese and its surroundings from the water. You donā€™t need a sailing license.

ā€œUp for a treat during your boat ride? Ring the bell of ice cream parlour De Mient and order ice cream from your boat!ā€

Amsterdam may have beautiful canals, but Alkmaar can certainly compete. The best way of exploring the canals in Alkmaar is, of course, from the water in a boat. You can rent one on the Geestersingel. Via the Singel and the stronghold, you can sail right into the historic city centre with its characteristic draw bridges and monumental buildings. Fancy some ice cream? Ring the bell at ice cream parlour de Mient. You can simply stay on the boat. Also a must: City Beach De Kade on the Noorderkade!

Hey, did you know?

When youā€™re sailing on the Singelgracht, itā€™s impossible to miss the Molen van Piet. This stage mill was built in 1769 and functioned as a corn mill until 1993. Officially, the name of this mill is ā€˜Molen De Grootā€™, but because the Piet family has lived in and managed the mill for four generations, the mill is colloquially called ā€˜Molen van Pietā€™.
