From bibles to beer @ Jopenkerk

If you want to drink Haarlem’s Jopen beer, you need to pay a visit to the place it’s made: the brewery in the old Veste Church.

From the grand café you can view the impressive, shining copper kettles in which Haarlem’s liquid gold is brewed.

There’s a unique story behind each freshly poured glass of Jopen beer.

Will it be a Jopen Mooie Nel IPA, Koyt, Doubting Thomas or a Malle Babbe? You can become acquainted with a range of beers in the grand café. We recommend a tasting where you sample three Jopen beers as you are told the unique story behind each one. If you’d like some food with your beer, why not try a high beer, where tea is replaced by Jopen beer? The Jopen Church also plays host to a number of events, so keep an eye on the calendar.

Hey, did you know?

There’s a long history of brewing beer in Haarlem, formerly one of the principal beer-brewing cities in the Netherlands. In the 14th century, brewing beer was serious business and many breweries were built on the River Spaarne and the Bakenesser Canal, along which the ingredients were easily transported. On the wharfs, there were 112-litre beer barrels known as ‘Jopen’, to which Jopen Beer owes its name.
