‘Golden’ group portraits @ Frans Hals Museum

As the most famous Haarlem artist of the Dutch Golden Age, Frans Hals is inextricably linked to the city.

The museum that is named after him, a selection of the artist’s most beautiful paintings, in particular the portraits in which he specialised, is on display.

In the Frans Hals Museum, paintings by Frans Hals and his contemporaries take you back to the Dutch Golden Age.

The Frans Hals museum allows you to get to know and admire not only the work of Frans Hals himself, but also the works of other 16th and 17th century Haarlem artists such as Hendrick Goltzius, Johannes Verspronck and Jan Steen.

The building which houses the museum also strongly reflects the atmosphere of the Dutch Golden Age. Constructed in 1609 as a home for elderly gentlemen, the building later served as an orphanage and in 1913 it was converted into a museum.

Hey, did you know?

Another part of the Frans Hals museum, De Hallen, stands on the Grote Markt. This is the museum for modern and contemporary art. Twice a year it hosts and exhibition about developments in current art, focusing on photography and video.
