They were all built in the 17th century, a time when Middelburg was the second most important port of the Northern Netherlands after Amsterdam. More highlights of this city include the late Gothic town hall, Middelburg Abbey and the Lange Jan abbey tower.

The Lange Jan abbey tower is a beacon to Middelburgers, who only feel they are home when they can see it. From an early age, children are taught to keep an eye out for Lange Jan so they always know where they are. If you climb up the tower, on a clear day you can see as far as the surrounding Zeeland islands.
