Must visit museum

When you’ve in Haarlem, an absolute must visit is the Teylers Museum on the Spaarne.

Dating back to 1784, it is the oldest museum in the Netherlands and still echoes with memories of bygone times. The high, rounded ceilings and large wooden showcases containing the exhibits are magnificent.

“In the museum, you’ll find fossils, ancient coins and scientific instruments.”

The Teyler Museum owes its collection to the wealthy banker and silk merchant Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778). He was very interested in science and art, so it came as no surprise that he left his assets to a foundation for the advancement of knowledge of these subjects. In the museum, among the collection you’ll find fossils, ancient coins and scientific instruments, in addition to drawings and prints by Dutch and Italian masters.

Hey, did you know?

The museum is named after Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who lived in the house at Damstraaat 21. After he died, a ‘book and art room’, also called the Oval Room, was built behind his house. It has remained unchanged since it opened in 1784.
