Sit Back in Amsterdam's Oldest Cinema

It’s really a shame to have to sit indoors when you’re in Amsterdam, but you can – or should, in fact – make an exception for The Movies.

This stylish cinema from 1912 has a stunning art-deco interior, four film rooms and usually plays artsy arthouse movies.

“The Movies is a fixture in Amsterdam. You can watch arthouse movies, documentaries and the better Hollywood productions in an art-deco interior.”

You’d think that Tuschinski from 1921 is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, given its art-deco look. Yet a cinema was opened on the Haarlemmerdijk 10 years earlier: Tavanu. The cinema that later got the name Hollandia en The Movies, is a fixture for Amsterdam citizens. It mainly shows arthouse movies. Prior to the movie, you can eat Asian and Indonesian inspired dishes in the restaurant that is also situated in the seventeenth-century building.

Hey, did you know?

The restaurant is also situated in the building of The Movies and has the appropriate name Tavanu. This was the cinema’s name when it was opened in 1912.
