The joy of Solex

A great way of exploring the Kromme Rijn region is by Solex bicycle. Dress up in sixties-style long, leather coat and a cap and off you go, puttering past Dutch Waterline forts, lovely country estates, castles and orchards galore.

“Purr along past orchards and castles on a Solex, taking a break at the Kromme Rijn River.”

The Solex tour starts at Fort Vechten, one of the largest forts along the Dutch Waterline. Armed with a full tank of fuel and a map, you can set off on a tour that takes you past the castles on the Langbroekerdijk, stopping to take a break on the banks of the Kromme Rijn (Crooked Rhine) River, to visit one of the fruit farms for coffee or to buy a bag of local produce to take home with you. A nice place to stop for lunch is De Veldkeuken in the coach house on the Old Amelisweerd estate.

Hey, did you know?

The Fort at Vechten is also home to the Dutch Waterline Museum. The museum tells the unique story of how water was used as a line of defence in wartime.
