A croquette or chips after going out? No, that’s not how they do it in Rotterdam. There, they head to Warung Mini for a midnight snack. At this warung – Indonesian for eating establishment – you can order Javanese-Suriname classics like pom sandwiches or baka bana (baked banana) with peanut sauce.
Warung Mini in the Witte de Withstraat has become a staple in Rotterdam. And that’s certainly true for the Indonesian, Javan and Suriname dishes you can order here. That was also the mission of ‘Uncle’ and ‘Aunt’: to gain more familiarity with these cuisines in Rotterdam. A few highlights of the menu are the curry sandwich, saoto soup and the roti with chicken. Before taking a bite, here’s another tip from auntie: ‘if you’re not used to spicy food, take it easy with the yellow sambal.’
Nice to know
Indonesian, Javanese and Suriname dishes are often a bit spicy, but did you know spicy can be brought to a whole new level? Currently, Pepper X has the reputation of being the spiciest pepper in the world with a pungency of over 3.18 million on the Scoville scale (that measures heat of chilli peppers). To compare: a jalapeno pepper scores ‘only’ between 2,500 and 8,000 on the Scoville scale.
